Also called a cap, a crown replaces and covers tooth structure and restores it to its original shape and size and/or improves on it. Crowns are often needed after a piece of tooth has broken and/or decay must be removed, with less tooth structure available for proper functioning, strength and esthetics. A crown is placed and cemented onto the prepared surface of the tooth.
